More Math fun

A lot of people might think I’m turning crazy, but I’m actually having a lot of fun with my current math class. It’s the last Algebra that I have to take before going into Statistics.

I thought that I would share a few sweet problems that I ran across today. Not very difficult, but they just looked cool!

1) 4x + 1 = 13

2) e-0.07t + 3 = 3.08

Ans 1) 4x + 1 = 13

ln4x + 1 = ln13

(x + 1)ln4 = ln13

x + 1 = ln13 / ln4

x + 1 = 1.85022

x = 0.85022

Chk 1) 41.85022 ≈ 13

Ans 2) e-0.07t + 3 = 3.08

e-0.07t = 0.08

lne-0.07t = ln0.08

-0.07t = ln0.08 / lne

-0.07t = -2.52573

t = 36.08186

Chk 2) e-2.52573 + 3 ≈ 3.08

  1. Wow! I was just thinking recently that I was really missing not doing Algebra anymore. I took one look at your two sample problems and though thought to myself, how the heck do you solve that now? I have no idea! Oh well. When Kyle gets into math, I’ll have to brush up! :)

    But I even gave you the answers! =)

    I’m really bummed that this is probably as far as I need to go with math. I have a book on Calculus that I’m considering taking a crack at now that I’ve finally got a decent grip on Algebra.

    I’ve got a surprise coming tomorrow on my contribution to the turkey today… I know Tim will at least appreciate it! I’m sure I’ll be the laughing stock of many though…
