Texas Fold’em

Thursday, January 26th, 2006 by Ben

It’s Friday afternoon, our Realtor calls us and informs Shae and myself that we have an offer coming on our house. “Be warned,” she says, “I think their going to low-ball us.” Some discourse ensues between the two Realtors and we get the offer on our table. It’s about 7k lower than our asking price. It’s a little tight for us so we decide to counter up just a few thousand so that we can make our bottom line. This is where our gamble begins:

Embracing Freedom

Monday, January 23rd, 2006 by Ben

Today, while on the bus reading Thomas Friedman’s, From Beirut to Jerusalem, I came to really appreciate what freedom we truly have as Americans. In the late 1980’s in Syria (yeah, not long ago), if you so much as looked at the government wrong it was enough to get you put on their “list”. Not like in our country though. In Hama, for example, it became so dire that the military performed raids in the night and took entire families out into the street and killed them. During an uprising from the Muslim Brotherhood they literally ended up running tanks through a few neighborhoods, followed by steamrollers. It wasn’t over differences of wealth, or differences of nation, or even major differences of belief.

I’m happy that I can open the paper and see open and willful dissent, several times with my own name at the bottom. It is this which our country is founded on, and these values that we should hold dearly. I just hope that we can all consider this the next time something our government does something that upsets us. Say something. It won’t hurt. Somebody might just listen. (please refrain from NSA jokes here ;))

Tolkien’s Bday Bash

Saturday, January 21st, 2006 by Ben

This afternoon we went down to celebrate JRR Tolkien’s birthday with the good people at McMenamins Kennedy School. It’s an old elementary school that has been transformed into a hotel, laden with local art and a pub in the old Detention room. To top the whole thing off, the Willamatte Radio Workshop put on a true, on-stage, radio performance of The Hobbit! Complete with sound effects throughout, music, audience participation, and a costume contest during the intermission. Of course, everyone in the contest tied.

When we walked up to the room where the performance was to take place, we were greeted by two skinny, sneaker wearing hobbits who were tying balloons for kids and offering to teach them to juggle. Last year they wore no shoes but were forced to this year because of the Health Department, or so they said. Johnathan even got a private show by a man walking around in a Mad Hatter hat, twirling four crystal balls in his hand. He was enthralled… for about 45 seconds, which tells us clearly that this man was good! The events go all day long, starting with the entire trilogy at 9am in a theatre in the hotel. Maybe next year we can try to catch one of them too!

Value of Time

Tuesday, January 17th, 2006 by Ben

I didn’t write this but a part of it touched me quite profoundly. The value of a month…

To realize the value of ONE YEAR, ask a student who failed a grade.

To realize the value of ONE MONTH, ask a mother who gave birth to a premature baby.

To realize the value of ONE WEEK, ask the editor of a weekly newspaper.

To realize the value of ONE HOUR, ask the lovers who are waiting to meet.

To realize the value of ONE MINUTE, ask a person who missed the train.

To realize the value of ONE SECOND, ask a person who just avoided an accident.

To realize the value of ONE MILLISECOND, ask the person who won a silver medal in the Olympics.

Clackamas College

Overall, we did pretty well at the tournament. It was fairly small so there wasn’t a whole lot of competition; somewhere around 8 schools or so. After the first day of literally running at full-speed around the campus trying to get to my Individual Events, I had decided that it really wasn’t my weekend. The events that I was entered into on the first day were Editorial Commentary (Jun), Extemporaneous (Jun), Persuasive (Jun), Speech to Entertain (Jun), and Duo (Nov).

Loving Boundaries

Monday, January 16th, 2006 by Shae

I love Johnathan more and more everyday. And when I think I can’t possibly love him more, I stand corrected. The first month of motherhood was really hard for me… and especially that first week… the first night home from the hospital SUCKED. But I’ve always loved Johnathan more than anything in the world.

I must admit, I didn’t really know my Grandfather. He is my mother’s father. Heard lots of stories, but only have a couple of my own. I was more sad for my mom when he passed so young, than for myself or for him. I forgot to ask about him today, sorry maw.
