Did God Create Evil?

Friday, March 31st, 2006 by Ben

I caught this on a message board this week and it struck me as a fine piece of wisdom.

The university professor challenged his students with this question:

“Did God create everything that exists? ”

A student bravely replied “Yes, he did!”

“God created everything?” the professor asked.

“Yes sir,” the student replied.

The professor answered, “If God created everything, then God created evil since evil exists, and according to the principal that our works define who we are, then God is evil.”

The professor was quite pleased with himself and boasted to the students that he had proven once more that the Christian faith was a myth.

I read a review this week for a cheap music service called alltunes. It is based off of another website at allofmp3. They hail no monthly fees and just .02 per megabyte! This equates to about an entire album of music for between $1 or $2, depending on the quality you want. You just have to plug in a few bucks for their credit style system. I also heard that after purchasing a few credits you could preview entire songs at a lower bitrate… so far I don’t believe that to be true. However, the preview goes on for quite some time so I don’t mind it too much.

With that said though, others have raised questions about the legality of this service since they are based in Russia and thus circumvent US laws. I’m not sure who I believe but they’ve been around for a few years so anyones guess is as good as mine. As a result, I’m not sure if when my $10 credit runs out I’ll ditch them or stick with it. It is nice to see a more competitive pricing model than iTunes though! Just maybe a little too competitive!

Poopin-Troopin

Shae had an early birthday “Ladies Night Out” last night so, naturally, I assumed the role of sole caretaker of Johnathan. Something that I’m not always used to and often struggle with but consistently enjoy nonetheless.

We had a great night with lots of reading and laughing and eating (only a few cookies… I made him share) but the real gem came in the morning. Well, we woke up in the same bed because he sensed something awry with the Mama-less house and climbed up with me at about 1am. I always enjoy being kicked in the face by 3 inch feet! Really I do! Seriously! Anyway, this morning I was getting him ready to go to church so he could play with his toddler friends in the playgroup and I could work in the back with the Sunday school audio/video techs, and he touched his diaper and said, “poo?” Well, normally we have a routine of sitting on the potty (by we I mean Johnathan) for ten minutes at a time just so he can coax us into blowing bubbles for him, but i thought this might be different. So I pulled off his overalls and hustled him onto the potty, and blew bubbles, and… “plop — plop!” That’s right! Two golden ones (not literally) right into the honey-bucket! I think we’re making some serious progress!

Off to Prague

The day is finally here! In approximately 17 hours we will be flying to London and then into the capital of the Czech Republic. Somewhere around 20 schools are expected to compete and I’m proud to be with one of them. We hope to find some Internet access somewhere to make a post or send out an email, but if we don’t it’s not that we don’t love you all… we’re probably just having too much fun!

We will have plenty of photos when we return!

Academy Awards

I still can’t believe that I sat down and watched even part of this confounded foray of Hollywood idolatry… but I did. It’s all Jon Stewart’s fault. Further, just because they picked a great host doesn’t mean I’m going to watch any of the crappy movies nominated (unless they come to a McMenamins theatre, which doesn’t show crappy movies, thus negating my previous comment) or buy anything presented during the advertising segments of the show.

During the show I noticed that some of actors actually have brains — and use them! It was refreshing. My respect for George Clooney ran up tenfold because not only did he not thank ten-thousand people that I don’t know, and humble himself by recognizing each nominee was an excellent actor (I hadn’t seen any of the films so I’ll take his word), but he also proceeded to talk a little about the progressive nature of Hollywood over its history. I learned something. Totally not expected, but very well received. He set the bar, being the first acceptance speech, and everyone after him utterly failed in his wake.

Djai has declared himself a ham. At least, he’s beginning to question it. The proof is on the table though. Clearly.
